Because I had never really thought about flying my airplane through TFR areas, I had never really thought about adjusting their display intensity on the screen. Like a lot of others, I just thought of TFR’s as something to avoid. Most that I had seen on my screen were fire or sports venue related.

Last week however, I needed to file IFR to escape the PHX valley due to a cluster of Presidential TFR’s (as many as nine at the peak).

I had my IFR lo chart depicted in Map mode and thought I was good to go. Unfortunately, at about 100ft on departure my screen went bright yellow from the ADSB depiction effectively masking most of the details of my chart right when Tracon modified my clearance. It was quite a scramble for a minute or two. I cajoled a vector until I could get the screen sorted out.

My recommendation is to dial down the intensity of the display.

Yes, I dialed opacity way down for TFRs to see the underlying map layer.

Suggest a Foreflight or WingX backup. Always have a backup.
Never to worry again.
